Science Museum of Western Virginia

The Science Museum of Western Virginia (SMWV), located in downtown Roanoke, is a leading informal educational institution dedicated to sparking curiosity and making science and technology accessible to all. Serving a diverse demographic across Southwest Virginia, SMWV reaches more than 36,000 Pre-K through 5th grade students each year through a variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)-based educational programs, along with onsite exhibits and outreach events that attract thousands more. With over 50,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, the museum welcomes more than 90,000 visitors annually and ensures there are no barriers to entry by providing free admission to hundreds of EBT/SNAP card holders each year. Outside of the museum, SMWV is a vital community resource for local STEAM-based education, offering summer camps, school programs, and new initiatives, such as its partnership with Head Start to expand The LAB Jr., an eight-week program that introduces preschoolers to STEAM concepts through hands-on, play-based learning. The museum continues to provide children and families across western Virginia with an inspiring space to learn and grow.
